Marketing manager Trust Masarirambi says; “The Westgate Shopping Centre taxi rank, which is due to be completed in four months time, will become the first fully formalised operational taxi rank at a shopping centre on the West Rand.”

The relocation of the taxi rank forms part of the Centre’s continued infrastructure improvement efforts and follows closely on the heels of the waterproofing project which is nearing completion.

Westgate Centre manager Vinolia Andrews adds; “To ensure that all of the commuters needs are met, the local taxi association Dorljota was extensively involved in the planning and design phases of the taxi rank relocation project. It is our view that Westgate has a vital role to play in the development of the community in which we operate and as such, it is critical to involve the relevant stakeholders when addressing matters that affect them.”

Research conducted by Westgate indicated that a significant proportion of shoppers travel by taxi to the centre. The co-owners of Westgate, in conjunction with Centre Management, therefore decided that by providing a structured taxi rank they would be enhancing the overall shopping experience of these shoppers.

Facilities at the new taxi rank include: taxi rank offices; ablution facilities; seating areas; canteen and pause areas, featuring formal and informal trading stalls. The new taxi rank will, along with a clean operating environment, offer protection from the weather and create a secure environment.

Along with formalised lanes, provision has also been made to accommodate metered taxis in the new structure. During the construction work phase of the project, estimated to be for a four month duration, shoppers can park for free at the multilevel parking and easily access the Centre through Entrances 5 or 6 by following the orange arrowed signage.
