TomTom commissioned study on holiday trends reveals interesting results
The study found that more people have had scheduled holidays this year in comparison to 2011. The 2012 YouGov survey results showed that 49% of citizens are booking a holiday for one to two weeks - an eight percentile growth from the previous year. December is the time in which respondents will most likely schedule their annual leave (45%) followed by June (9%). December marks one of the most important family holiday times and most statistics show that people prefer to spend their holidays with family followed by friends.

It also found that the favourite destinations remain in South Africa with the most popular one being Cape Town. Travelling by car remains the main means of reaching a destination with 60% finding the mobility and freedom of having their own car a necessity whereas 38% mentioned the luxury of travelling by plane.

Meanwhile, 50% of all South Africans indicated that they would choose a tropical island holiday over a safari, mountain resort or a cruise. The feedback was unanimous when respondents were asked which elements constitute having the perfect holiday with the response being ‘good companions’ and ‘interesting places’.

The 2012 YouGov survey results included the participation of 522 respondents over the age of 18, all of whom currently live in South Africa. The results were accumulated during 13 to 17 April. The survey was carried out online.
