Generation Next Awards names trendiest newspapers

Published: 31 May 2011

Results of the seventh annual Sunday Times Generation Next Brand survey have set the cat among South Africa’s marketing executive pigeons. The survey polled more than 7 200 individuals in six provinces. Those polled were asked what they regarded as the trendiest brand in 72 categories.

“The awards dare not be ignored, since they have been sourced from urban consumers aged from eight to 22 – the backbone of the consumers of the future,” observes Sifiso Pule, trade marketing manager of Ads24, the company that handles advertising sales for Media24 newspapers.

The Daily Sun was considered the coolest daily newspaper, followed by The Times and The Star. In the coolest weekly newspaper category, Sunday Times was voted number one, with City Press second and Sunday Sun third.

“The poll manifestly shows that the Daily Sun is here to say for the long haul,” says Pule. “We at Ads24 are delighted with the results of the survey, given that advertisers targeting the youth market are bound to take the outcome to heart and re-examine their ad spend accordingly.”

HDI Youth Marketeers conducted the research analysis in conjunction with academic validation partner Monash South Africa and statistician ArienStrasheim.
